The Renaissance of a Classical Estate

Viticulture on steep slate slopes for more than 450 years: Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium Trier was established on 3 February 1561 as a Trier Jesuit College. After an eventful past, the educational institution received its current name. The management of the vineyards was used to help fund the school, where Karl Marx received his diploma in 1835.

As recently as the 1980s, the estate was one of the leading producers on the Mosel and Saar. At the time, 45 hectares were in cultivation. The wine journalist Mario Scheuermann even ranked the estate among the top German producers in his classification from 1990/91.

Over the ensuing decades, this traditional producer disappeared from the radar of the wine world. Gault Millau, for example, wrote in 1997, “We’re going to pass over the dry and off-dry wines.” In 2001, the estate dropped out of the rankings of this guide. Dr. Karsten Weyand, director of the Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier, took over the management of Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in 2010. He has since initiated the qualitative renaissance, which is confirmed with the new 2012 vintage. Today, the estate is focused exclusively on Riesling with 25 hectares in some of the best sites of Trittenheim, Graach, and Bernkastel.

The 2011 and 2012 Schiefer Riesling trocken, as well as the 2012 Schiefer Riesling feinherb (6.90 euros each) impress with their fine, crisp, and almost pure minerality and nuanced fruit flavors. All the wines offer an excellent quality-price rapport. The 2012 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese trocken (11.90 euros) is complex and has a colorful aroma of exotic fruits, along with a long finish. The residually fruity-sweet 2012 Spätlese wines from Trittenheimer Apotheke, Graacher Domprobst and Himmelreich (11.90 euros each) are showing great. All three are clear, direct, and they each show their place of origin well. Moreover, they offer great drinking pleasure.

My conclusion: With the 2012 vintage, Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium is on the best way to regaining its former esteem. Congratulations – and keep it up!

Schiefer Riesling Qualitätswein feinherb 2011

November 2012

Wein + Markt 11/2012 writes about the wines of Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium:

“All three wines show plenty of ripe peach on the nose and are unmistakably Mosel. On the palate, the dry as well as the off-dry are well balanced, juicy, and supported by stimulating acidity, all three with their own character, but at the same high level of quality.
